Hon. Obi Aguocha, member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has defended his approach to empowerment, saying his priority is to create sustainable opportunities rather than distribute short-term relief materials.
Speaking on Rapid FM, Umuahia, Aguocha said, “I can’t give to you what I can’t give to my children in terms of empowerment.” He explained that his philosophy focuses on initiatives that create lasting value, including education, infrastructure, healthcare and employment opportunities.
The lawmaker highlighted several interventions in his constituency, including about 3,000 streetlights across communities, erosion-control work at Atayi Ibeku and various school projects at Ndume Ibeku, Amuzukwu, Ofeme and Umuwawa.
He also cited his advocacy for the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, which was eventually taken over by the Abia State Government, and his efforts toward establishing a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano. He said the bill has been transmitted to the Presidency for assent.
Aguocha described such initiatives as “institutional empowerment,” arguing that development should focus on structures capable of improving lives for generations.
He also called for sustained efforts to clear pensioners’ outstanding gratuities, recalling that his late mother died without receiving hers.
On governance, Aguocha praised Governor Alex Otti’s administration and described himself as a strong advocate of its development agenda.
He further discussed his advocacy for Nnamdi Kanu, saying the matter reflects broader concerns about justice, equity and the grievances underlying separatist agitations in the South-East.
Ultimately, Aguocha said effective representation should be measured not only by what constituents receive today, but by the opportunities and institutions created to improve their lives tomorrow.
