2027: Abia Farmers Adopt PDP Candidate Kelechi Anosike, Say ‘Who Will Feed Abia’?

UMUAHIA, Abia — The Abia State Farmers Association, an umbrella body representing about 40,000 farmers across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas, has adopted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, as its preferred candidate for the 2027 Abia State governorship election.
The Association announced the decision in a statement issued in Umuahia, saying it followed deliberations at a State Stakeholders’ Meeting attended by members of its State Executive Council, the 17 LGA chairmen, LGA executive members and representatives of farmers across the state.
According to the Association, its decision was influenced by Anosike’s proposed Welfarist Government agenda, particularly his plans for agriculture, food security and rural development.
The farmers identified Operation Feed Abia (OFA), restoration of agricultural extension services, farm mechanisation, farm grants and support programmes as key reasons for their endorsement.
They also cited the proposed revitalisation and digitalisation of farm settlements, improved rural roads, electricity, water supply, markets and agro-processing facilities across the state.
The Association said it believes agriculture, with appropriate government support, can become a major source of employment, income and wealth creation while improving food security and potentially reducing pressure on food prices.
It resolved to mobilise its members across the 17 LGAs to participate peacefully in the electoral process, promote the agricultural components of Anosike’s policy agenda and encourage members to obtain and retain their Permanent Voter Cards.
The farmers also urged other groups and citizens in Abia to examine the various policy programmes being presented ahead of the election before making their individual choices.
“Who will feed Abia? Who will support the farmer? Who will make agriculture productive again?” the Association asked.
It said its position was anchored on the belief that “a fed Abia is a strong Abia” and “a supported farmer is a productive farmer.”
The statement was signed by Bar Obi Okezie, President of the Association, and its Secretary on behalf of the State Executive Council, the 17 LGA chairmen and members.
