Francis Chigozie Ibeleme has formally declared his intention to contest the Umuahia South State Constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections, pledging to deliver people-oriented representation and proactive legislation.
Ibeleme made the declaration during a stakeholders’ forum held at his residence in Olokoro, Umuahia, on Saturday. The event drew members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) leadership in Umuahia South Local Government Area, alongside party stakeholders and supporters in Abia.
Speaking in an interview with DON FM News, Ibeleme said his decision to run under the APGA platform was driven by his confidence in the party’s ability to support and deliver his candidacy. He emphasized that voters are increasingly focused on individual competence rather than party affiliation.
“Electorates no longer vote for political parties but for individuals. I am confident in my competence and my connection with the people. My constituency will elect me in 2027,” he said.
Highlighting his academic and professional background, Ibeleme noted that he holds three degrees from the United Kingdom and has gained valuable experience abroad, which he intends to deploy in public service.
“I have gathered experience over the years while studying and living abroad. I believe it is time to give back to my people. I don’t think I am asking for too much to serve,” he added.
The aspirant outlined his legislative priorities, with a strong focus on protecting the interests of women and youths. He said his agenda would build on existing empowerment initiatives and charity programmes he has supported.
Commenting on the performance of current lawmakers in the state, Ibeleme acknowledged their efforts but called for more proactive engagement.
“You can’t do more than you know. Some are performing, while others are not as active. It is time for us to become more proactive. There are critical laws needed to move Abia State forward,” he said.
He also expressed support for Governor Alex Otti, describing him as capable of transforming the state but in need of a supportive legislature.
“The governor is God-sent and capable, but he needs Assembly members who will present quality bills to support development. I will be part of that team in 2027,” Ibeleme stated.
Several APGA chieftains at the event, including Sir Grant Nwoko, Director-General of the Chigozie Foundation, and Henry Nwoha, a member of the party’s State Working Committee, endorsed Ibeleme’s ambition. They cited his track record in community development and empowerment programmes as key strengths.
The 2027 Umuahia South State Constituency race is expected to attract significant attention as political activities gradually gather momentum across Abia State.
