Dare devil armed robbers today Friday May 21, 2021 caused panic in Umuahia the Abia State capital when they shot and killed a Police officer and driver before robbing a foreigner of N3 million (Three million) naira which he just withdrew from the Guarantee Trust Bank, GT Bank, Aba road branch Umuahia.
Sources disclosed that the armed robbers who came loaded with their rifles and ammunitions trailed their victim, who is said to be a Chinese national business man from GT Bank where he went to withdraw money to Mission Hill area, precisely opposite Total Filling Station Ossah Road, opposite Gado hotels and blocked his vehicle.
One source disclosed that the victim was a guest at the hotel, and was about to drive into the hotel premises when they caught up with him and as the Police orderly tried to make a move, he was immediately shot on the spot. The robbers reportedly shot sporadically to scare away residents who scampered for safety amid commotion.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna said that the Chinese national had gone to the bank to withdraw the money unaware that he was being followed by the robbers. Newscritic reports that the shooting led to businesses closing shop early and banks shutting down operations as early as possible to customers due to security reasons.
The driver of the foreigner also lost his life, however, there are conflicting reports regarding the safety of the foreigner. One account said he was abducted by the gunmen, while another report had it that he managed to disappear from the scene unhurt.
