The Onitsha South Elders’ Forum (OSEF) has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State to revoke the contract for the installation of solar-powered Streetlights in Fegge, a major community in the Local Government Area.
The Elders’ Forum which commended Governor Soludo for his determination to make life easy for the residents of Fegge community by asphalting their roads and installing street lights, however, decried poor execution of the streetlight by the contractors.
Some of the streets which benefitted from the Streetlight contract include: Miss Elems, PortHacourt Road, Zik Avenue among others.
In the statement signed by the president of the Forum, High Chief Dede Uzor A, Uzor, the group lamented that some of the solar powered streetlight are not functioning, while some that are said to be functioning are not bright enough to lit the area.
They said the contract for the installation of the Streetlight were awarded and completed about six months ago but unfortunately they have not been functional because the contractors apparently “used fake and substandard materials”.
The group called on the Governor to carry out his own discreet Investigation on the matter and direct the contractor to return back to site to do a better job, “because the main purpose of lightening the community is to see in the night but not to be thrown into darkness “
“The era of fake and substandard jobs should be over by now with the scarce resources available to the Government.
Broad day robbery by contractors should stop” said the group.
They said those contractors who collect huge amounts from Government and refuse to do the job or perform fake job due to their apparent closeness to the powers that be should be arrested and forced to refund the money.
The Elders’ Forum commended Governor Soludo for the reconstruction of some roads in the Local Government especially Fegge and also the installation of streetlight, saying that it showed he was proactive and love the people.
OSEF called on the Governor to do something urgent about some of the critical roads in Fegge yet touched before the rain starts. Some of the roads, they said, should attract the Governor’s attention are Uga Street, Orlu Street by Balewa via Arondizuogu and Bida Road through to Main Market and Mbaonu Ejike road including Anambra Street linking Niger street all in Fegge,OSEF appeals
