Abia State Police Command has commenced moves to unravel the circumstances surrounding an alleged assassination attempt on the life of the Labour Party, LP, senatorial candidate for Abia South at the February 25, 2023 National Assembly polls Engr. Chinenu Onyeizu.
This is even as the Abia state Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has directed his chief security officer, CSO, to join in the investigation to unmask the masterminds and their sponsors.
NewsCritic online reports that three suspected gunmen had last Friday July 28, 2023, stormed the Abayi Ohanze Obingwa country home of Onyeizu, and for over two hours held everybody hostage, while desperately looking for the LP senatorial flag-bear.
According to information made available by Onyeizu’s media team the, gunmen when told that Onyeizu was not in the house insisted that it couldn’t be true as he was spotted at the burial ceremony of the late Prince Vincent Ogbulafor earlier in the day at Umuahia.
The gunmen were said to have left after manhandling Engr Onyeizu’s relations who were at home during the incident.
NewsCritic online gathered that the Abia State Police Commissioner, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie after being adequately briefed by the authorities of Umuobiakwa Divisional Police, through the Aba Area Command has set up a crack team of investigators to get to the root of matter.
The Abia State authorities who in the last few weeks have been rattled by the spate of unprovoked attacks on innocent residents in some parts of the state, are said to have equally drafted in some security personnel in the efforts to get to the root of the development.
Only last Tuesday July 25, 2023, the state Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Industry Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu’s convoy was ambushed and attacked by gunmen in Aba enroute to the Eziukwu Market (Cemetery market) for a familiarization tour.
While, the commissioner escaped unhurt, however, two Police personnel lost their lives in the incident.
Reacting to the development, Engr Onyeizu who described the act as dastardly and cowardly, said he cannot be cowed into abandoning his mandate. NewsCritic online reports that the LP senatorial candidate is currently challenging the electoral victory of his main opponent , Sen Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, at the Appeal Court Owerri Division.
He appealed to all the relevant authorities especially security agencies to urgently provide him with adequate security, while urging them to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
