After over 12 years of trial, Justice Muhammed Idris sitting of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has fixed December 2, 2019 for judgment in the corruption case involving the former Governor of Abia State, now senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.
Kalu is being prosecuted alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Udeh Udeogu, his Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House over an amended 39-count charge bordering on conspiring and diverting the sum of N7.65bn from the coffers of the state.
Kalu has been on trial over corruption while he served as Abia state governor between 1999 to 2007. But the case has been delayed, but finally the matter is coming to an end following the date being fixed for judgement. In 2019, Orji Kalu emerged the senator representing Abia North senatorial district. He was elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC. He was also elected as senate Chief Whip.
However, the National Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia ordered a rerun in some three local governments of Abia North following the petition filed against his election by the PDP candidate, senator MAO Ohuabunwa. The majority chief whip has gone on appeal.
