Chief Lucky Akabuike has formally joined the race for the position of President General of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Worldwide, emerging as one of the prominent contenders from Afugiri.
Akabuike, a seasoned administrator and labour leader, brings with him decades of leadership experience at both state and community levels. He previously served as Transition Committee Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area and as Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abia State chapter, positions that placed him at the centre of governance and labour negotiations in the state.
At the grassroots, his leadership footprint is equally notable. He served as President of the Afugiri Federated Welfare Union and later as President of the Umuegwu Federated Welfare Union. During his tenure, stakeholders say he handed over a united, financially stable and stronger organization, a record supporters argue demonstrates his administrative competence and capacity for consensus building.
Sources within Afugiri community disclose that the three traditional rulers in the area have reportedly agreed that the Ohuhu President General position be zoned to Egwu Ugwu Autonomous Community, a development said to favour Akabuike. Community leaders describe him as a tested figure with pedigree, experience and grassroots acceptance.
The contest for the Ohuhu Welfare Union’s top office is already generating significant interest, with three candidates having declared their intention to run. Observers describe the race as competitive, given the strategic importance of the President General in coordinating development efforts, community harmony and diaspora engagement across Ohuhu clans worldwide.
For Akabuike, the mission is clear. He says he is prepared for the responsibility and is committed to “getting Ohuhu working again,” with a focus on unity, institutional strengthening and inclusive development.
