An inmate of the Umuahia Correctional Service facility, Hon. Victor Apugo, has raised serious allegations against a serving officer at the centre, claiming that his life is in danger following his attempt to expose illicit drug activities within the prison.
Apugo alleged that an officer identified as Stephen Agwu threatened to kill him after he confronted him for allegedly smuggling and selling hard drugs—including colos and tramadol—to inmates. According to the inmate, the infiltration of these substances has contributed to the deteriorating mental health of several prisoners.
He further claimed that the prison authorities, including the State Comptroller, Chief Warder, Yard Master and other key officials, were aware of the ongoing fight to curb the sale and use of illicit drugs inside the facility. Apugo added that both the Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) and the Chief Warder have already barred the said officer, Agwu, from entering the centre due to his alleged involvement in the drug-smuggling operations.
Calling for urgent intervention, Apugo urged the Abia State Government and the Nigeria Police to take his complaints seriously and to hold Officer Agwu responsible should any harm come to him.
The Correctional Service authorities had yet to react to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
