A violent clash reportedly broke out among Labour Party lawmakers in the Abia State House of Assembly over the sharing of a cash gift allegedly sent by Governor Alex Otti, resulting in a serious injury. This incident according to Sahara reporters an online news service happened before the State Legislators traveled to United Kingdom.
Majority Leader Okoro Uchenna Kalu (Arochukwu) reportedly smashed a beer bottle on Akachukwu Ucheonye (Aba Central) during a heated argument at a caucus meeting in Aba. Ucheonye, who chairs the Appropriation Committee, had allegedly demanded a larger share of the money, citing his role in the speedy passage of the N150bn supplementary budget. The confrontation left him with a deep head wound and a concussion.
Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, who was reportedly present at the meeting, allegedly instructed members not to report the incident.
Despite his injuries, Ucheonye joined a state-sponsored trip to London, which allegedly cost taxpayers nearly N1 billion. However, again the trip according to Sahara reporters turned chaotic after lawmakers accused the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Majority Leader of hoarding 60% of the travel funds. Hotel security was called in to calm the situation it was learnt.
Sources claim that moves are underway to impeach the Speaker, and other top officers over alleged misconduct and misappropriation upon their return.
