Something big has happened to Umuahia the Abia State capital and indeed the South East Nigeria as popular entertainment expert and former governorship aspirant, His Excellency Mayor Lucky Igbokwe widely referred to as Don Lulu on Friday 27th June, 2025 unveiled his two new radio stations, the Don Fm and Ikoro Fm all situated at the breezy village of Umuawa Alaocha, Ohuhu, a 10 minute drive from Umuahia city centre in Umuahia North LGA.
The birth of the two radio stations is not only a boost to the entertainment industry but also a home for culture and communication with a goal to be the leading grassroots driven broadcast hub in the South East.
Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, a United Nations Mayor of Peace is the founder and Chairman of Don Lulu Foundation, a philanthropic organization that is devoted to charity and empowerment of youths in the society, says ‘’our vision is to be the leading grassroots driven broadcast hub in the South East, where tradition meets technology, and our identity is amplified, not erased’’.
For Don Don Lulu the event is not just a launch, ‘’it’s a homecoming, a rebirth and a declaration, adding that with the unveiling of the DON FM 103.7 and Ikoro FM 93.3 we are not just amplifying voices, ‘’we’re broadcasting the heart of our people. He said before the transmitters, we had the Ikoro, the sacred drum that summoned unity, dialogue and action. That same spirit he said, lives on through Ikoro FM, echoing our past through modern waves’’.
He emphasized that the Don FM on its part brings a fresh, youth driven energy that celebrates music, storytelling and innovation. When put together under the Don Media Group, these Stations give voice to our heritage, our hopes and our people’’.
The unveiling of the two radio stations coincided with Don Lulu 44th birthday celebration, which featured live concerts and shows that had in attendance iconic music stars like Davido, Kcee, Bright Chimezie, Sabinus, Zoro, Zlantan and others at the Umuahia Township Stadium. Simply put, Umuahia was literally shut down Friday night as Davido performed live, with Cubana Chief Priest on stage at Mayor Lucky Igbokwe birthday event. In fact, Umuahia has never had this kind of experience before, bringing these celebrities down to Abia State in what could pass as the biggest entertainment and cultural show in Abia.
Generally, the unveiling of the Don FM and Ikoro FM in Ohuhu the home town of the legendary Hon Dr. M.I Okpara was historic with the high and mighty in the society in attendance. They were former IGP Mike Okiro, Ambassador Empire Kanu, Rt Hon Chinedum Orji, Paramount High Chief Charles Onwuneme, Chief Uzodimma Okpara, Hon Cosmos Ndukwe, Hon Kelechi Onuzuruike and Chief Charles Ogbonnaya. Others were the representative of His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, the clergy, the Ohuhu council of traditional rulers led by HRM Eze Chionye Ngwuili, the Chairman of Umuahia North Council of traditional rulers HRM Eze Innocent Nwaigwe, Eze Nzenwata Mbakwe, Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu, Eze Kingsley Emekobum, Mayor Umuahia North Chief Smart Iheoma, Chief Eze Ukelon, President General Ohuhu Welfare Union Chief Okechukwu Uwazie, the captains of industry, business community, media executives and host of others were all in attendance.
To drive the vision of the founder of Don and Ikoro FM are two veterans of the broadcast media, who are well honed in the job. The debonair Mr. Alozie Uzoukwu sits at the top as the Managing Director of the Don Media Group, where he is to oversee the overall operations and business strategy of the media group. Hon Ugochukwu Emezue, another skillful and hardcore journalist is the Station Manager, who is responsible for editorial matters, programming and leading the team to achieve station goals. Interestingly both Uzoukwu and Emezue were former editors with Silverbird Television.
With the unveiling of the Don 103.7 FM and Ikoro 103.3 FM the number of radio stations operating in Umuahia alone have risen to about 10.
