With the Supreme court of Nigeria set to deliver its verdict in the coming days in the appeal filed by the kano state governor, Abba Yusuf challenging the nullification of his electoral victory at the march 18 2023 gubernatorial election, a sizable number of politically exposed persons and stakeholders across party lines have been placed under intense and close security surveillance by security agencies in the state ,newscritic.com.ng findings have authoritatively revealed.
The decision to close monitor the activities and utterances of the effected persons comes on the heels of what a security source described as deliberate attempts by some political actors in subtly inciting their followers through a wave of orchestrated propaganda and inciting political activities a head of the apex court ruling.
Newscritic.com.ng reports that on Sunday December 24 2023 the New Nigeria Peoples Party had organized a reception for Governor Yusuf after several days of absence from the state and duty post, a development which for several hours grinded activities in the commercial hub of the North.
The security apparatuses of the ever-volatile state newscritic.com.ng gathered are not finding the unusual reception ceremony funny.
Same for the opposition All Progressive Congress APC and its members, who are said to perceive the development as parts of the wider efforts by the NNPP to arm-twist and sway the supreme court and its verdict and to also incite violence in the event the expected ruling does not favor it.
Impeccable sources close to a particular security agency in the state, told newscritic that the wider security networks are not comfortable with the activities of the political actors of recent ,and fearing that the peace and security of Kano will face a serious threat if the increasing wave of orchestrated propaganda and provocative conducts of the politically exposed persons in the state are not checked, hence the decision to ring a chain of security surveillance around some people.
” We are not against political gathering and activities by any political parties. We are also not in any way opposed to them encouraging their followers in this anxious moment.
But we will not condone deliberate and mischievous moves by anybody, and or political platforms to compromise the peace and security of the state.
They should go about their activities without seeking to undermine the security networks of the state, and create tension and apprehension among the residents.
We cannot sit by and watch while some desperate political actors are busy sowing seeds of fear, anxiety and tension all in a bid to further their political interests.
For now, we already know those to hold responsible and we are following their activities and utterances.” one of the security sources noted.
As at Monday December 25 2023, following the NNPP’s reception for Governor Yusuf, the security agencies were said to have gone some extra lengths in cajoling and prevailing on APC no supporters not to embark on counter procession to that of the NNPP.
The APC members are believed to be growing increasingly impatient by the alleged persistent efforts of the NNPP to intimidate, blackmail and armtwist the judicial system to sway judgment in its favour.
” For the moment, we the APC members have decided to maintain the peace in difference to various appeals from some well-meaning quarters, especially the security agencies and allow the judicial process to run its full course.
Although, we have been severally provoked by the antics of some political desperados, we will continue to appeal to our members not to join issues with the NNPP for now. This is because, we know that their plan is to blackmail and intimidate, believing that it will save them ” a chieftain of APC stated
Although, the security light is being beamed on political actors from all the major parties, the most are said to be from the ruling NNPP.
