The Appeal Court will today Tuesday 14, November 2023 deliver its judgement on the petition of the Labour Party, LP, candidate for Umuahia North State constituency poll, Hon Smart Iheoma against the election of Hon (Barr) Kelechi Anderson Akaliro of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared Hon Kelechi Anderson Akaliro winner of the Umuahia North State constituency election held on March 11, 2023. However, the LP candidate who came second at the polls rejected the results, and petitioned the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, which on October 2 upheld the victory of the APC lawmaker.
The three-man panel of judges unanimously sustained the election of Akaliro, while dismissing the petition of Iheoma on all the grounds.
Not satisfied the LP candidate appealed against the judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal, seeking the court to declared him the winner of the election.
Akaliro had after the Tribunal ruling called on the petitioner and other aggrieved candidates to sheath their swords and join hands with him to advance the interest of Ohuhu people.
The judgement will be delivered at Abuja where the appeals arising from the tribunal judgements were heard following the relocation of the Appeal tribunal to Abuja.
