The Chairman of the Abia PDP Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere on behalf of the PDP governorship candidate in the Abia 2023 governorship election, Sir Okey Ahiwe, his running mate Dr Jasper Uche, members of the State Working Committee, SWC, the enlarged State Executive Committee, SEC, and the entire members of the Abia PDP family congratulate Col. Austin Akobundu (retd) the PDP Senatorial candidate in the Abia Central Senatorial zone on his victory at the Appeal Court.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had declared Mr. Darlignton Nwokocha (Labour Party), Minority Chief Whip of the Senate as the winner of the Abia Central Senatorial election following the February 25, 2023 National Assembly elections. Following the declaration, Col. Akobundu petitioned the Abia State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal which upheld the election of Mr. Darlington Nwokocha.
Dissatisfied with the judgement of the Tribunal, Col Akobundu appealed the judgment of the lower court at the Court of Appeal which today vacated the judgment of the Tribunal and pronounced Col. Austin Akobundu as the authentic winner of the Abia Central Senatorial zone election.
Akobundu’s victory at the Appeal Court is not only a victory for the PDP, the good people of Abia Central and Abia State but for all lovers of justice, equity, fair play and the rule of law.
Col. Akobundu comes into the Nigerian Senate with a lorry load of experience garnered over the years across multiple sectors of the Nigerian national life; notably military, administrative and political sectors. A fine officer and a gentleman, Col. Akobundu served at various levels of the government and Nigerian military as well as the PDP. As a former Minister of State for Defence, Deputy National Chairman of the PDP (South East) as well as the National Organising Secretary of the PDP Col. Akobundu contributed immensely to the growth and stability of the party and the country.
As he takes his deserved seat in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Abia PDP is proud to send one of our best to join the Nigeria’s First Eleven to reshape and determine the fate and future of millions of Nigerians.
As true democrats, the Abia PDP commends the judiciary for ensuring that justice is served at the end and believes that this judgment will reinforce the faith of Nigerians in the judiciary as one of the pillars of our democracy.
