Enhanced Security Presence In Aba, Major Cities Triggers Concerns As Top Politicians Come Under Security Surveillance

Palpable fear and anxiety have gripped residents of major cities and towns in Abia state in the past two weeks. This followed a large and unusual security presence in some parts of the state, especially Aba the commercial hub and Umuahia the capital city.

NewsCritic online findings have revealed that although before now there had been military check-points along the Port Harcourt Express way and some other parts of the states, the security posts have witnessed an unusual increase since May 29, 2023 thus raising some concerns among the residents.

Apart from the usual check points, findings have also shown that some designated areas and routes in and outside major cities in the state have witnessed security beef up within the period.

Although no official reasons have been adduced either by the Abia state government and or the top hierarchy of the country’s security agencies for the high security alert, informed sources told NewsCritic online that the development may not be unconnected with the state government readiness to deal proactively with any plan to breach peace in the state.

NewsCritic online reports that the new helmsman in the state, Dr Alex Otti had during his inaugural speech warned of his administration’s zero tolerance for would-be trouble makers and their antics. He had specifically noted that the state would not be enough to accommodate his regime and promoters of violent criminal activities.

Some sources who are in the know revealed that there are alleged plans by some people to instigate violent criminal activities in the state, just like are being witnessed in some parts of the South East states, mostly Imo and Anambra.

“The truth is that some criminal elements masquerading under politics have vowed to make Abia ungovernable through the instigation of violence and criminal activities. The state government is very much aware of the plan as there are enough security reports to this effect.

The huge security presence predates the inauguration ceremony, hence the note of warning sounded by the Governor. Some people are determined to recreate the Imo state situation in Abia, using some criminal elements. But unfortunately, for them the new administration is already aware of their evil plans and is ready to protect Abia and Abians,” a source said.

Another credible source said with the abrogation in the state last week of the illegal collection of revenues and other related activities, some people may fall back on criminal enterprises.

“The past few years saw an increase in touting and other illegal activities. With the recent clampdown on illegal fees collection and touting activities, it is only normal for the government to act proactively to avert any untoward development which may severely affect the peace of the state, “another source revealed.

Apart from the huge security presence in some flashpoints NewsCritic online authoritatively gathered that some politically exposed persons may have been placed under security surveillance in an effort to properly secure the state.
