Chief Okey Ahaiwe on Saturday 4th February 2023 emerged winner of the rerun Governorship Primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State for the March 11 election. Until recently, Chief Ahiwe was the Chief of Staff to Abia State Governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu.
Ahaiwe scored 496 votes to win the re-run PDP primary following the death of the former candidate, Prof Uche Ikonne.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who chaired the PDP Election committee, announced the result of the primary on Saturday after votes were counted.
According to him, Ahaiwe polled a total of 469 to beat other aspirants. He said that 516 voters were accredited while 12 votes were declared invalid.
Mayor Lucky Igbokwe aka Don Lulu scored 12 votes, Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu the Deputy Governor polled 12 votes and Sampson Uka Orji 11 votes.
The PDP Caucus in Abia state had zoned the ticket to Isialangwa North following the death of Prof Uche Ikonne. Isialangwa stakeholders endorsed and adopted Chief Ahiwe as their consensus candidate making him the preferred choice of the delegates to replace Prof Ikonne.
