The national president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, chief Chidi Onyeukwu Ajaegbu, has decried the state of public education in Abia State, saying that the Abia educational sector is on life support.
Speaking while commissioning the Chidionyeukwu Ajaegbu ICAN Resource Centre, Mgbarakuma in Umuahia, the ICAN boss said that the future of education in Abia does not look bright, as salaries were not paid and teachers demoralized to do the job. He stressed that the standard of education in the state has fallen beyond redemption.
He noted that Abia requires help in all sectors, and called on well meaning Abians to come to the help of the state in anyway, which would be appreciated.
Chief Ajaegbu, explained that the reason why he opened ICAN Resource Centre is to create awareness for ICAN, so that people will embrace accountant profession in the state, and to benefit from it.
He blamed Abia State Government for failing in their obligation, for not being able to pay teachers salaries.
He pointed out that those passing through special centres don’t have the right foundation and can’t compete, which he said is responsible for the large number of failure in ICAN exams.
He asked that special exam centres should be closed, so as to produce the right kind of people.
The 56th president of ICAN in Nigeria, Dame Onome Joy Adewuyi, described the event as very historic and symbolic because it is a colloboration between ICAN and Chidionyeukwu Ajaegbu, the golden president.
She described Chief Chidionyeukwu Ajaegbu as a philanthropist, who had in 2014 donated N24m, and a percel of land for ICAN secretariat Aba, and another N24m for that of Umuahia.
According to her, at the national level, he has championed several laudable projects, which has earned him respect among young and old charterd accountants.
The national president noted that one of their strategic drives is to raise advocacy on transparency and accoutability in the country among those entrusted with public funds and thanked the governor of Abia State for the donation of a piece of land for the project.
The Chairman of ICAN in Abia State, Sir Michael Iro Ibe, noted that it was on the 2014 that Chief Chidionyeukwu Ajaegbu pledged to pay a counterpart fund for the construction of the ICAN Secretariat
in Umuahia, adding that we are all here to withness and celebrate the fulfilment of that promise.
He thanked the governor for allocating a piece of land for the project and also welcomed the 56th president for the commissioning ceremony.
He therefore called on the governor to give the road leading to the secretarait a face lift, to enable them access the office with ease.
