Ohanaeze Ndigbo United Kingdom and Northern Ireland chapter has commended the Human Rights Defenders Foundation, HURIDE, Ebonyi State for its selfless service as defender of the oppressed and weak in the society, just as the group donated N200,000 cash each to three indigent persons.
According to Comrade Sampson Oko Nweke, Chairman HURIDE Ebonyi State, the donation from Ohanaeze Ndigbo United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to the distressed boy Ifeanyi Umoke, who was thrown into burning fire got to the HURIDE through Mr Collins Eze, Technical Assistant to Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State.
He said Ohanaeze Ndigbo Diaspora expressed its satisfaction with the programmes and activities of HURIDE, and decided to make the donations to the victim of human rights abuse, master Ifeanyi Umoke through the group. The 13-year-old as reported by NewsCritic online was cast into the burning fire by some conscienceless men in Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, LGA, for allegedly trying to steal rice.
The president Ohanaeze UK and Northern Ireland, Dr Nnanna Igwe, said the Ohanaeze appreciates the good works HURIDE is doing in Ebonyi State, and decided to assist some indigent people at home as part of activities to mark the virtual World Igbo Day London, 2020.
He explained that three persons with serious challenges were selected to be assisted with N200,000 each by the Ohanaeze totalling N600,000 (Six Hundred Thousand Naira). According to Dr Nnanna Igwe, the money was raised through donations from members in support of the less privileged members of the society.
Among the three beneficiaries is master Ifeanyi Umoke, who was thrown into the burning fire for attempting to steal rice. The plight of the indigent boy with no helper was brought to the front-burner by HURIDE, Ebonyi State.
The second beneficiary of the largesse is a new baby without abdominal covering, who had successfully undergone surgery at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. The father is Mr. Mba-Ichite from Umuekwule, Umuahia, and could not afford the cost of the treatment.
While the third beneficiary is an elderly woman, Madam Clara Iwuchukwu, who is living in a shabby and open thatched house at Umuchu-Ikeduru Imo State.
Ebonyi State Chairman of HURIDE and his team has gone to present the cash gift to master Ifeanyi Umoke in the presence of his aged and sick father.
Comrade Sampson Oko Nweke thanked the Ohanaeze UK and Northern Ireland for coming to the rescue of the indigent members of the society with monetary donations to each of the three beneficiaries. Sampson Oko Nweke, also called on the well-to-do in the society to emulate the kind and humanitarian gestures of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Diaspora to help humanity.
