The Abia State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, is organising a Road Walk Show to sensitize the general public on the impending flood disaster in Abia State as forecasted by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the annual flood outlook (AFO) released by Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
Newscritic reports that the agencies have forecasted flood situation for the different parts of the country. The Annual Flood Outlook states that 102 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in 28 states of Nigeria fall within the highly probable flood risk areas, while 275 LGAs in the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT fall within the moderately flood risk areas.
Abia State is one of the 28 states in the federation that has been declared flood red alert. The report indicates that Abia State will experience high rainfall amount of about 2500 to 300mm, especially in the months of September and October.
A press release signed by Sunday O. Jackson, Executive Secretary Abia SEMA, said that the annual flood outlook has predicted that Umunneochi LGA is among the highly probable flood risk LGA in 2020, while Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Osisioma, Isiala-Ngwa North, Ukwa West, Ukwa East and Obingwa are among the moderately probable flood risk LGAs.
Abia SEMA Executive Secretary, Jackson disclosed that it is organising the Road Walk Show on Tuesday 18, August, 2020 to Sensitize the general public on the impending flood disaster.
