President-General of Ohuhu Welfare Union, OWU, High Chief Obi Aguocha has requested for job slots to be given to qualified candidates of Ohuhu clan in the revived Golden Guinea Breweries Limited, Umuahia.
Aguocha made this demand when the OWU paid a courtesy visit to the management of the GGBL Umuahia, on Monday November 18, 2019. The President-General told the core investor of GGBL, Chief Okey Nzenwa that the Ohuhu people have adopted Golden Guinea lager beer as their drink of choice in appreciation of the efforts he made in bringing the breweries back to life.
He asked the GGBL management to ensure that Ohuhu people are given enough job slots and also get distributorship jobs with the organisation in recognition of the leading role the Ohuhu people played in the establishment and sustenance of the breweries in Umuahia.
Said Aguocha “I have come to thank you for your strength and courage in bringing GGBL back to life. Before, if you pass through here it was an eye sore, but today the story has change and we have come to appreciate you for what you have done.
Continuing Aguocha said “I also want to appeal to you that in terms of employment opportunities that you remember Ohuhu people to give us more opportunities, and don’t also forget us in the distributorship of the products as we look forward to a better and progressive relationship ahead, he adds.
The President-General told the core investor that he is not asking that the job slots should be given to him as an individual, but the community in general so that it will benefit the people at that level. Aguocha said that the late Dr M.I Okpara was a detribalised leader the reason why he situated the breweries in Ibeku to demonstrate the unity and oneness of Ohuhu and Ibeku as a people.
In his response Chief Nzenwa described himself as an Ohuhu son, saying that his father was Okpara’s boy in the defunct NCNC, and also worked in Umuahia as a lawyer. The core investor promised that the management will ensure that everybody benefits from the business just as he thanked Aguocha and his team for coming to identify with them, a development that he said has made him more confident.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Umuahia North LGA, Barr Kelechi Ezechukwu, said GGBL is an extension of Ohuhu land despite the fact that Umuahia is for Ohuhu and their Ibeku brothers. He stressed that Ohuhu should be given preference, while promising that Ohuhu people will give the core investor maximum support to succeed in the business.
Hon Clement Onyeoziri on his part said that the people of Abia will always celebrate Chief Nzenwa for what he has done in reviving GGBL, adding that God will help him to succeed. Mr Eze Ukeleonu said Ohuhu people are willing to donate land to GGBL should there be need for future expansion of the business.
The commissioning of the breweries will be done in the first quarter of 2020, according to Nzenwa. Also in the entourage of the President-General were, Chief Enyinnaya Ihukwumere, the son of former manager of GGBL, Hon Onyekachi and Mr Chika Nwabueze, a media consultant.
