The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), on Wednesday, July 24, applied to withdraw its petition challenging the outcome of the 2019 presidential election won by President Muhammadu Buhari. The PDM had opposed the victory of Buhari, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the election.
The Nation reports that the counsel to the PDM, Aliyu Lemu, told the presidential election petition tribunal that the party had instructed him to apply to withdraw its complaint. The PDM unexpectedly brought a motion seeking to withdraw from the petition filed by its presidential candidate, Aminchi Abu, against President Buhari and two others.
The party and its candidate had brought the petition to the tribunal hinging their action on section 138 of the electoral act, which held that the election be nullified where “a candidate was validly nominated but unlawfully excluded.” In the petition, the PDM had listed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President Buhari and the APC as respondents.
When the case came up on Wednesday, July 10, Barrister Lemu made appearance for Aminchi, Barrister Morrison Onunu announced to represent the PDM headed by its national chairman, Chief Frank Igwebuike.
