A Federal High sitting in Umuahia, Abia State has granted Abia journalist, Obinna Don Norman bail after two weeks in prison custody.
Norman was arrested by a team of Police operatives from the Police headquarters Umuahia over issuance of dud cheque to Abia business man and hotelier, Nwaeze Francis Jele.
When the matter came up for mention, counsel to the applicant, Ladu N asked the the court to make an exparte order directing the respondent to release his client on bail. He argued that his client ought to be granted bail since the offence for which he is kept in custody is a bailable offence.
A mild drama however, ensured in the court when the journalist told the court that he is not owing the business man whose hotel, Upper Graceland he lodged for 104 days accumulating a bill of N650, 000 (Six Hundred And Fifty Thousand Naira) in the process.
The hotelier in response denied ever receiving any money from Norman since he issued the cheque to him, detailing how he made efforts to recover the money from him including visiting him in the prisons yard with friends to ask for amicable settlement after the cheque he issued was returned. Nwaeze maintained that Norman was lying before the court and demanded evidence that he paid him the money in question.
In his ruling the judge admitted him on bail pending the determination of the substantive suit. The case was adjourned till September 26, 2019.
