Robbers Attack NUJ President’s House In Umuahia, Cart Away Money, Valuables

The rising spate of insecurity in Abia State, particularly in Umuahia and Aba touched the home of the National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo, located at Dozie Way, Umuahia yesterday, when dare devil robbers attacked his house and carted away huge cash and items worth millions of Naira. Nobody was injured in the attack.

News Critic reports that the robbers who struck at noon carted away cash, computers, smart phones and jewelries and other valuables worth millions of Naira in value. They also destroyed doors and windows to be able to gain access into the president’s rooms where they ransacked and took items before leaving uninterupted.

The security guard who was employed to secure the house was said to be absent from his duty post at the time of the robbery incident. The guard and his assistant have been picked up by the police from the Ehimiri police station and are helping in the investigations into the robbery attack.

When News Critic reporter visited the NUJ president’s house where the robbery took place, some family members and in-laws were on ground, while work is ongoing to replace the doors and windows that were destroyed by the robbers in the process of the attack.

From the evidence available, the robbery gang came through the back fence, removed the electric wire attached to the fence before they jumped into the compound. Then they broke one of the windows and removed the iron protector to enter the duplex, and then went straight to the masters’ bedroom where they took time to break into the secured doors and also overturned the whole house in search of valuables.

The security guard said he went out when the incident occurred and neigbours were not aware that robbers were in operation at the building at that time of the day. Police said the incident is insiders dealing, a reason why the security guards were picked up for questioning.

At the time of filing this report, the guard is still at the Ehimiri police station, while police said investigations is continuing.

All effort to reach the NUJ President, Isiguzo was not successful at the time of this report, but family members said he is sad over the robbery incident at his private residence. However, they said he is grateful to God that no one was hurt during the attack.

In the past months, there have been reported incidents of robbery attacks in Aba and Umuahia but Police said they are on top of security in Abia state. Residents of the state have called on the security agencies to rise up to the task of restoring security in the city of Aba and Umuahia.
